RESUMEN: Este trabajo produce un diagnóstico objetivo del mercado mundial de reaseguros catastróficos. Para ello se hace un breve recuento histórico del sector de seguros remontándose hasta sus orígenes. También se pretende, por medio de la recolección de información referente a siniestros catastróficos, fijar una posición global en cuanto a la ocurrencia y costo de las catástrofes a lo largo del mapa global. En el desarrollo del mismo también se analiza la actual situación meteorológica y sus tendencias ya que esta variable juega un papel protagónico en el sector. Luego de recolectados los datos, se infiere sobre algunos de los problemas posibles frente los cuales se encuentra el sector. Se identifican y analizan sus causas para poder identificar los mecanismos utilizados para contrarrestarlos y se formulan propuestas con el mismo fin.

ABSTRACT: This paper on catastrophe reinsurance produces an objective diagnostic about the world market. To achieve this purpose, a brief historical account is made tracing the insurance industry back to its origins. It is also intended that, through the gathering of information regarding catastrophic events, a position on the occurrence and cost of catastrophic losses throughout the globe is set. The current meteorological situation and its tendencies are also identified and analyzed due to the fact that this variable plays a leading role in the market. After the data is collected, the possible problems with which the industry is confronted are identified. The causes of these problems are identified and analyzed in order to be able to point out the current mechanisms available to act as counter measures and to be able to produce a serious proposals with the same purpose.
