El concepto de Smart City ocupa hoy un lugar de gran importancia en el desarrollo de muchas ciudades alrededor del mundo, atrayendo cada vez más la atención de muchos gobiernos y dirigentes que buscan gestionar sus ciudades de una manera más inteligente. El propósito principal de este artículo es analizar diferentes tipos de proyectos de ciudad inteligente desarrollados en América Latina según la taxonomía de Iniciativas Smart City propuesta por el Politecnico di Torino. En una primera parte se describen de manera general diferentes métodos utilizados para medir la calidad de vida de las ciudades y las múltiples metodologías empleadas por algunos de los índices y clasificaciones mundiales para compararlas en función de su nivel de “Inteligencia”. En la segunda parte, se toma una muestra de ciudades de América Latina con el fin de conocer la situación real de esta región en materia de Smart Cities, identificando y clasificando sus proyectos mas representativos relacionados con el tema. El resultado final de este análisis es un ranking de estas ciudades en función de su esfuerzo por ser más “inteligentes”.

Abstract: The concept of Smart City occupies today a place of great importance in the development of many cities around the world, increasingly attracting the attention of many governments and leaders willing to manage their cities in a smarter way. The main purpose of this article is to analyze the different types of smart city projects developed in some Latin American cities according to the Taxonomy for Smart City Initiatives developed by the Politecnico di Torino. This article is divided in two main sections: The first part is a general description of the different approaches used to measure the cities’ quality of life and the multiple methodologies employed by some of the indexes and rankings in the world to compare them according to their level of smartness. In the second part, a sample of Latin American cities where selected in order to know the actual situation of this region regarding Smart Cities, identifying and classifying their most representatives projects related to the topic. The final outcome of this analysis is a Ranking of Latin American cities according to their effort to be “smarter”.
