Publicación Acceso abierto Inteligencia de negocios para las empresas del sector de materiales de construcción(Universidad EIA, 2010) Estrada D’amato, Santiago; Peláez Orrego, María MercedesABSTRACT: The Construction Materials manufacturers in Colombia need a system of information management that helps them to make accurate business decisions in every organization levels. Business Intelligence presents itself as an alternative to satisfy this need; it encompasses the use of data to derive insight and gain competitive advantage, and has helped thousands of companies around the world to improve their decision making process (Tapscott, 2009). In the process of implementing a Business Intelligence system in the company, it is necessary to follow some stages that guarantee the correct functioning of it. These stages are: align the project and its objectives with the strategy of the company, determine the information sources to extract the data needed, define the project resources, create personal networks between the employees to share knowledge between them, perform technological vigilance extracting the most important facts of the business and its environment, create reports and queries transforming the data collected into usable knowledge, and sustain the model by refreshing the information available, developing new information needs and implementing the feedback received from the users. The information needs in these companies to be developed by the model, may arise from the strategic analysis of the business environment, or from the management basic cycle (Plan – Do – Review – Revise) mostly from the Planning activities in the forecast of future scenarios, and from the Reviewing activities to control the performance of some key indicators in the company. There are two types of information sources where enterprises can find these information needs: internal sources and external sources. Business Intelligence requires dynamic and multidimensional reports to allow the deep analysis of the data. To create them many times spreadsheets are not enough because they are not designed to handle huge quantities of data, therefore, they have some limitations with the size of some files and the process of refreshing the reports. It is recommended to acquire specialized software in BI that integrates the functions of extract, transform and load the information. The information flow in the model follows 5 stages: First, the request for information that should be revised by the BI team. Second, the determination of the information sources to be used. Third, the extraction and transformation of the data. Fourth, the consult of the reports and the generation of feedback by the users. And Fifth, Refreshing the reports when necessary.
