Publicación Acceso abierto Estimación de las emisiones de contaminantes atmosféricos provenientes de fuentes móviles en el área urbana de Envigado, Colombia(2013-11-15) Londoño, J. (James); Correa, M. A. (Mauricio Andrés); Palacio, C. A. (Carlos Alberto)This research presents the results of estimates of air pollutants (CO, NOx, SO2, PM10 and VOC) from mobile sources in the urban area of the municipality of Envigado for 2010. We use information on vehicles registered in the municipality, capacity, vehicular distribution and activity for categories. The emissions were estimated by the factors in the IVE method with best fit to the mobility patterns, vehicular fleet characteristics and type of combustibles in the area under study. As a result, it was possible to estimate hourly and daily emissions of the pollutants studied, and with the help of a GIS system, were plotted. From the results, we found that the largest releases occurred on roads with higher vehicle traffic (Carrera 50 or Avenue Regional, Carrera 48 or Avenue Las Vegas, Carrera 43A or Avenue El Poblado and road parallel to the stream La Ayurá), where the largest contribution does carbon monoxide (CO) with 18,4 t d-1 (71,3 %), time of day which showed the highest emission of this pollutant is at 12:00 hours with 1,4 t h-1 (7,4 %) and the vehicle category that most contributes to environmental levels are Automobile with 8 t d-1 (32,7 %).Publicación Acceso abierto Evaluación de procesos biológicos unitarios en la remoción simultánea de nutrientes para minimizar la eutrofización(2013-11-18) Saldarriaga, J. C. (Julio César); Hoyos-Ayala, D. A. (Dora Ángela); Correa, M. A. (Mauricio Andrés)Two different systems of biological treatment were operated (anaerobic-anoxic-aerobic –A2O–, namely, arrangement I, and aerobic-anoxic, namely, arrangement II). After modification by the addition of AnoxKaldnes as a support medium for the aerobic chambers, they were used in the simultaneously elimination of organic material and two nutrients:nitrogen and phosphorus. The arrangements involved the growing of suspending biomass in anaerobic and anoxic chambers, and combined (suspended and attached) in the aerobic chambers. During the experiments, recirculation rates (aerobic-anoxic) within 100 and 300% were guaranteed, applied in the same experimental periods, from the secondary settler toward the anaerobic chamber in the arrangement I and toward the anoxic chamber in arrangement II, with rates of 100%. The hydraulic retention time (HRT) varied within 10 and 24 hours per arrangement, and the solids retention time (SRT) remained between 15 and 20 days. The processes were evaluated using synthetic residual water with composition similar to the found in the domestic residual water; it was prepared from milk powder whey with the addition of macro and micro-nutrients.Publicación Acceso abierto Evaluación de un clarificador de manto de lodos a escala de laboratorio(2013-11-20) Wills, B. A. (Beatriz Amparo); Castro-Jiménez, C. C. (Camilo César); Correa, M. A. (Mauricio Andrés)In this paper, we report the results for the operation and performance of a laboratory-scale clarifier sludge blanket suspension hydraulic, through a series of experiments that used a 23 factorial design. Factors in the design included: turbidity of raw water, hydraulic load rate and type of coagulant. These factors could affect the formation of a blanket, and therefore, the system’s efficiency on the removing turbidity. Two types of coagulants –aluminum sulfate and C-325 (a cationic polymer)– were tested in two types of synthetic raw water prepared in the laboratory through the addition of kaolin with high (Type I with 100 NTU) and low (Type II with 15 NTU) turbidity. The system was operated with surface load rates of 30 and 70 m3/m2.day. Results show that the best blanket was generated when the system was operated with Type I water and a hydraulic load rate of 70 m3/ m2.day, with turbidity values in the effluent below 2 NTU.
