ABSTRACT: The purpose of the foliowing paper is to demonstrate the inconvenience of using the California Bearing Ratio values based on remolded specimens to design the thickness of pavement structures on natural subgrade soil. The investigation was carried out by selecting three different places in the proximities of the city of Medellín. Disturbed and undisturbed samples were taken to be tested in the laboratory. As for the laboratory tests results, the values of the California Bearing Ratio were significantly higher for the undisturbed samples, which suggests the unsuitability of using soil specimens whose structure has been clearly destroyed and where the laboratory conditions are different to those of the field in-place soil. The bibliographical research and the obtained results show that the proposed thesis is reasonable since the C.B.R. values for the undisturbed samples differ significantly from those of the remolded specimens for similar values of moisture content and dry density. It is also clear that for natural moisture contents that are greater than optimum, an excessive compactive effort, far from improving the mechanical resistance of the soil, deteriorates it.
