With the constructions of the Hospital San Vicente de Paul building at Medellín, started a new zone vocation in their surroundings. Several health institutions have being settled close to 51D avenue, “Avenida Juan del Corral”. The main ones are the Hospital itself, the Clínica León XIII, the faculties of medicine, public health, odontology, and nursery of Universidad de Antioquia and Clínica CES and Universidad de Antioquia IPS. A spontaneous increase of ground uses related with health was generated, and is still growing. From the point of view of urban planning, this is an opportunity to re-order and to improve the nearby districts. Generation of positive conditions for the surroundings development is one of the city authority’s responsibilities, especially when the recognition of Medellín by their high-quality health services is a city objective. Accordingly with this issue, the aim of this academic document is to offer to planning authorities guidelines to generate urban-favorable conditions for the Avenida Juan del Corral, with the purpose of being transformed and known as the “Medellín Health Boulevard”.

Reducción del ruido en imágenes de tomografía computarizada usando un filtro bilateral anisotrópico

This work proposes the use of an anisotropic bilateral filter (ABF) to reduce the noise in computed tomography images. The FBA is implemented in the tridimensional space, allowing the adjustment of filter parameters depending on the image resolution in each axis. The utility of the FBA was demonstrated using a standard image quality phantom which was scanned using a 240 mAs reference dose, and subsequently with 50 % and 25 % of the reference dose. Additionally, two clinical cases were processed, corresponding to routine clinical, intravenous contrast-enhanced abdomen and thorax scans. The phantom study found that the FBA keeps a better tradeoff between noise, spatial resolution, and low contrast detectability, when it is compared to traditional filtered backprojection reconstructions, routinely employed by current computed tomography scanners. Hence, results in the phantom suggest it is possible to reduce radiation dose by at least 50% without affecting spatial resolution or low contrast detectability. The clinical studies revealed that the FBA can decrease image noise and still provide enough information for adequate diagnosis. Prospective clinical studies are necessary to demonstrate whether or not the observed noise reduction would allow a significant decrease in radiation dose.

Three mathematical models are presented for the regression and correlation of a cloud of N points in R3 with Cartesian coordinates xj, yj as abscissas, with his respective ordinate ri as a radius of curvature of the axial or sagittal section, but not corresponding to the Gaussian curvature, with a paraboloid, ellipsoid, and hyperboloid of revolution in canonical form. This model assumes that data are properly centered, that is, the apex of the surfaces of revolution is preset at the origin; therefore, it is applied in human cornea.

Relaciones entre el concepto de movilidad y la ocupación territorial de Medellín

Major Colombian cities face the beginning of the 21st century with an additional concern in their possibilities for development, sustainability, and inhabitability: urban mobility. This term, easily associated with the way vehicles and individuals flow through the different urban transport infrastructure options, has more background and involves the study of how these cities have materialized in time. It implies, therefore, a broader reading that must be established from a different frame of knowledge. Universidad de San Buenaventura and Universidad de Medellín, in the city of Medellín, Colombia, have coincided in studying the mobility problem and their effect on the territorial occupation of that city. The present paper offers the results of the above mentioned research for which assumes a conceptual position about the term “mobility”, it relates the mobility to the occupation of Medellin by means of key variables and map algebra and establishes as conclusion some directions to be considered in the planning of the space. We found that several aspects of city life, like occupation density, property purchase decisions, transportation options, and territorial planning have different consequences on mobility and allow offering solutions.

One objective of an introductory course of open-channel flow is the analysis of gradually varied flow profiles. This paper shows a teaching-learning strategy that might improve the university practices for teaching hydraulics. It is well known the depth-specific energy curve (y-E) for describing and interpreting open-channel flow hydraulics. It is proposed to complement that curve with the depth-energy slope curve (y-sf). By using a graphic comparison, it aims to illustrate the concepts of the subcritical (y>ycritical, v<vcritical), critical and supercritical flow concepts and, on the other hand, the subnormal (y>ynormal, v<vnormal), normal y supernormal flow concepts. This way, it is proposed to explain the behavior of the twelve possible gradually varied flow profiles.

Experimental results from a series of biological unitary processes for the simultaneous removal of organic matter (OM), nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) are shown in this study. A synthetic substrate similar to a domestic wastewater of average concentration was used. The experimental development was made using an A2O system (anoxic-aerobic-anaerobic) performed in two phases. The preliminary stage lasted 60 days and included, besides the acclimatization of the biological sludge, the examination of polyurethane foam as a support medium in the aerobic phase. In the secondary stage, the stability was rapidly reached; this phase lasted 280 more days; a significant increase of the removal efficiencies was observed to be close to 92.5 % in organic matter, 87.7 % in nitrogen, and 83.5 % in phosphorus. Parameters such as dissolved oxygen (DO) and oxide reduction potential (ORP) were permanently monitored and maintained in values according to the requirements of the processes in each reactor. On the other hand, pH was measured to be higher than 7.2 units, ensuring the viability of the nitrification-denitrification processes. A hydraulic study using tracers was developed in order to find out the effect of the support medium on the hydraulic regimen of the aerobic reactor.

Remoción de níquel y DQO presentes en las aguas residuales de la industria automotriz mediante electrocoagulación

By means of this study was determined if the electrocoagulation technique helps to minimize the nickel and organic matter, chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentration, present in wastewaters from automotive industry. A randomized multilevel factorial experimental design was used; being the current density and reaction time evaluated in three levels, while the separation between electrodes was analyzed at two levels. Electrocoagulation was carried out in a batch reactor using iron electrodes with monopolar arrangement. The acid digestion, atomic absorption air-acetylene flame and the closed reflux-colorimetric (micro COD) analytical techniques were used to determine the content of the contaminants. The conditions where it got the most decontamination of the water analyzed were found; being the Applied current density: 1,04 A/dm2, operative time: 17 minutes y; did not the electrode separation influence. The results show that electrocoagulation could be effective to reduce nickel and organic matter (COD) present in wastewaters from automotive industry.

Reporte de experiencias de la aplicación de Competisoft en cinco mipymes colombianas

Micro, small and medium-sized software development enterprises are one of the most representative sectors of the global economy. For this reason, obtaining concrete results in the actual context through the methods and models proposed to support software quality is an important contribution to the field of the software industry. In this sense, this paper presents the application of the models proposed by Competisoft (an Iberoamerican project focused on increasing the competitiveness of small enterprises through the process improvement strategy), in order to drive the improvement of some software processes into five Colombian small and medium-sized software development companies. Additionally, this paper also shows the behavior of the application of Competisoft from two approaches: (i) determine, for a company, how productive is adoption of this improvement strategy, in terms of effort and progress, and (ii) refine, validate, and improve models of Competisoft based on the results in reports of experience.

Organizational world will always have goals to reach and obstacles to fight, in order to reach those goals. Identifying and representing goals and problems are previous stages in solving problems and establishing goals. These tasks are commonly made in natural language, and no formal methods are used on them. For this reason, in this paper we propose first-order-predicate-logic structures for expressing goals and problems, so we can easily analyze them and establish semantic relationships and consistency among them, making a direct translation from natural language to a phrasal formal representation. This representation leads us to assess true-or-false value of statements.

Resistencia al desgaste erosivo-corrosivo de aceros austeníticos fermanal

We obtained austenitic alloys of the Fe-Mn-Al, Fe in the range (4.9~11.0 wt% Al) - (17.49~34.3 wt% Mn) -(0, 43 ~ 1.25 wt% C), which were melted in an induction furnace from high purity materials. The alloys were evaluated with respect to corrosion, wet erosion and corrosion-erosion at an impact angle of 90°. For the evaluation of corrosion a solution composed of 0.5 M NaCl and silica particles with size between 210 to 300 microns was used in order to analyze the effect of aluminum and manganese content in the resistance to erosion and corrosion-erosion of these alloys. To characterize the corrosion, response technique was used by potentiodynamic polarization curves and using the same technique as Tafel extrapolation, the microstructural characterization by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the composition of corrosion products were analyzed using diffraction of X-rays (XRD).

Resolución del problema de enrutamiento de vehículos con limitaciones de capacidad utilizando un procedimiento metaheurístico de dos fases

This paper presents an alternative procedure to solve the Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem (CVRP) with homogeneous fleet. The paper proposes a two-phase metaheuristic algorithm: routes design and fleet scheduling. The first phase is based on heuristics and metaheuristics procedures in order to build an initial solution that is then improved using tabu search to obtain non-dominated solutions in polynomial computational time. For the second phase, corresponding to fleet scheduling, the problem is approached using an analogy with the identical parallel machine scheduling problem. This procedure looks for the minimization of the fixed cost of using installed capacity as the objective function. The proposed procedure was tested using both a random-generated instance and real data, giving competitive results in comparison with other heuristics tested.

Respirometría de Phragmites australis en presencia de materia orgánica disuelta y el xenobiótico clorotalonilo

The respiratory rate of Phragmites australis exposed to synthetic sewage water (SSW) and chlorothalonil (CLT) was evaluated using a respirometer. The study was divided into two phases with the following treatments: phase I with a) tap water, b) tap water + P. australis, c) ARS; phase II with a) SWW+ CLT (0,29 mg L-1), b) SWW + CLT (2,18 mg L-1), c) CLT (0,29 mg L-1), d) CLT (2,18 mg L-1). Each experiment was done by replicate. The influence of relative humidity (RH), solar radiation (SR), air temperature (T), barometric pressure (BP), evaporation and potential evapotranspiration (ETo) on P. australis respiration rate was analyzed. No significant differences were found on the respiratory rate of P. australis (p < 0.05) using tap water and SWW during phase I experiments; the same finding was seen for all phase II experiments. Meteorological variables affected the respiratory rate in all treatments. ETo, T and SR showed significant positive correlation with respiratory rate; RH and BP, a negative correlation.

Revisión de la literatura de las técnicas de medición para el estudio de la postura sedente

Aiming to find a measurement technique that allows studying the seated posture, we conducted the following systematic review. The search was made in specialized databases in the study area. The key words of the search included terms such as low back pain, sitting posture, pelvic tilt, among others. 2383 items were selected according to the review question proposed and these 228 from established inclusion criteria. They were found 17 items that allow you to identify the appropriate techniques for the stance study. The revision allowed proposing a guide for selecting a tool to evaluate the seated posture based on the benefits offered by the instrument to comply with the objectives of the study that you want to perform.

Una revisión de modelos y semánticas para la trazabilidad de requisitos

To minimize the caused impact by this evolution, the traceability has been studied and implemented through different models and techniques that allow achieve more quality in the software products. In this paper we show a survey about some requirement traceability approaches and analyze the way how they contribute to both consistency and completeness verifications of the development models.

El Riesgo del endeudamiento: La Crisis de la Deuda Soberana y posibles implicaciones

Due to the global financial crisis unleashed between 2007 and 2008 and which quickly spread to the real sector, many governments did come out to rescue banks, significantly increasing their debt levels and, in particular, debt sovereign. Thus, many countries have reached unsustainable levels of debt, so that central banks injected liquidity to markets and expanded its balance sheet to buy assets of countries and companies in crisis, in order to ensure the smooth functioning of financial system. That is why in this article provides an analysis of the levels of borrowing countries as a result of this process, and presents a series of reflections about the impacts and the consequences that these may have in the short and medium term, especially in predicting the magnitude of these impacts.
