ABSTRACT: In the construction sector, the manufacturers of prime materials are forced to become more and more competitive, providing the builder with new materials replacing existing alternatives, while retaining the same size, color and resistance characteristics. The principal product that is manufactured from clay is called ceramic. The quality of the final product depends on the mechanical, chemical and mineralogical properties of the prime material, that is clay. Given that the quality of the clay is the most important factor determining the quality of the final product; complaints about the quality of the clay of certain quarries is quite common within the brick manufacturing industry of the Valley of Aburrá. There exists prior investigation made in Russia and Bulgaria, where clays have been processed with bacteria to improve their mechanical and chemical properties. This experimental investigation focuses on creating the most suitable conditions for a process of fermentation with the help of microorganisms, whose secretions modify certain physical-chemical properties of the mixture clay-water. In the process of experimentation the clay from the quarry of San Cristóbal and additives such as paste of paper and husk of rice were used. Different samples with different combinations and proportions of these elements were prepared to be compared with the control samples. Finally the experimental outcomes were analyzed, contrasting the theoretical expectation with the observation in the field and laboratory.
